Why we made this

The Format was made with the intention of using a single clamp design, allowing riders to run their hands at the very extent of their bars.

After examining wear patterns of grips that have been through the ringer, we implemented several different patterns and ergonomic zones to deal with the different dynamics going on in each part of your hand.

Durometer Explained

Essentially, durometer is a measure of hardness. The lower the number, the softer the material.

Keep an eye out for this in the "specs" section.

Some models are available in our Supa Soft compound which measures at 9a.

Grip FAQ's

Almost certainly! Our grips will fit on any bar with a 22.22mm diameter (where the grips sit).
All MTB bars (and most others) are 22.22mm.

You can! Find them here.

Generally speaking, the softer the grip (lower durometer number), the quicker it will wear out.

To mount non-lock-on grips, we recommend placing some cable ties (approximately five) inside the grip with the clasp at the outer edge of the grips. Slide the grips on - the zip ties should allow a smooth and easy installation. Once the end of the grip is flush with the end of the bar, use pliers to pull the zip ties out, one at a time, from the grips. Voila!
Compressed air is also an option.

You can read the full user guide here, but the main points are:
• Follow handlebar torque specs.
• Make sure the grips are on all the way, especially for single clamp models. Lightly tap with a mallet if unsure.
• Never use hammer-in style bar end plugs in carbon bars.

As one of three touch points connecting you to your bike, the choice of grips matters as it influences how secure and comfortable you feel as you barrel...

Customers praised these thin grips for exceptional comfort and tackiness, working well with or without gloves. Many noted the pattern helps with hand positioning and solved numbness issues. The protective plastic end cap and single clamp design received high marks. However, some mentioned faster wear compared to alternatives.

Great feel with or without gloves

The Format grips are a favorite - I prefer thin grips and the pattern/shape seem to give my hands some extra hints about where I'm holding. I also like to switch between riding with and without gloves occasionally, and these grips feel great in both scenarios. Only slight con is how quickly the rubber seems to wear down, they definitely don't last quite as long as a OneUp 30mm grip, but I'll take the tradeoff for extra tackiness!

Amazing grips!

I’ve had these for about two seasons riding hard park, and they’ve held up like a beast! I really love the feel of these. Definitely recommend!

Solved hand numbness

In recent years, my hands had started to become numb on longer rides. Coming off of ODI grips for many years, these Format grips immediately solved the problem. No more numbness. Highly recommended.

Great grips…

The grips are standard now on all my bikes (different problem). They don’t wear quickly, are super comfortable and not too tacky. The plastic end keeps me from accidentally scratching the vehicle leaving the garage and the clamp makes for easy and secure install. Love em!

Why is Chromag Format my favorite grips?

I have had different grips in the past to compare and I have settled home on these awesome grips! They are perfect. Reason#1- Being a proud weight weenie- I like that it only has one aluminum clamp. Reason#2(my favorite reason)- The plastic end cap which is one piece with the grip makes it a great protector when it strikes trees and the ground. The end cap protects the rubber grip from being shredded. I don't know why most grip ends are made one with the rubber on the hand grip. It is bound to get shredded unless the rider never crashes or hits trees. I like the various colors too. Way to go Chromag !

Super soft

I must have tried 5 or 6 different grips and these are by far my faves. I love how my fingers fall into the grooves on the bottom. I do find they ware a bit fast but that the price of such a soft and comfy grip.

I like those grips because they have space for the last two fingers, they don't slip and fell good on your hand. I recommend rthem!

What do ya know

I can't really say I'm a grip connoisseur but I will say these things are my favorites. They look nice, they feel nice, they don't feel harsh, they keep my hands in a neutral and leveraged position. They're called format grips probably because they feel like they form to your hands. I hesitate to rave too much because I'm hoping they're available in the future as needed. Glad to see others reporting that they last too.

Some of the best out there

These grips are so good. First off, no outboard clamp means you can properly position your hands right to the outside edge of your grip. Why does this matter? If you don't like clipping trees, it's a must. Your brain knows where your hands are, it doesn't know where your grip ends. If slicing and dicing trees at speed with wide bars is your thing, these are your grips.

The rubber compound is firm which I like as the grips provide a lot of feedback on what's happening at my front wheel. I feel like I have just a little more control.. The rubber has tons of grip without being fast wearing. They're not quite sticky enough for gloveless riding in sweaty conditions but perfect with a thin glove.

This is by far Chromag's best grip ever and one of my all. time favorites. Git sum!

Such Grip

I've been running the formats for the better part of my biking life. I wear a size 8 Hestra glove and medium Chromag glove and these are a great fit. I place my middle and ring fingers in the divots rather than my ring and pinky. I find this allows me to get my palm right to the edge of the grip and gives me a sense of how close to the trees and rocks I am. The waffling on the back is unreal as well.

Nice grips but

I like these grips in general. They are a bit thinner and i wish they'd be thicker and more shock absorbent.
I had leaned my bike against the wall, but it fell on the ground and the end cap just cracked broken so easily. I know it's my fault that the bike fell, but I think the caps could have been more durable. I'm not happy with it.

Hi Jack,

Thank you for the feedback,
Since the Formats are a single clamp grip they are slightly tapered towards the end caps. This keeps the non bolt end in place on your bar. Generally if we see this happen its because people have not fully inserted the grip onto the bar and the endcap is floating in dead space not supported by the bar. Any knock or drop can crack or rip the end cap off. Also any of our metal end cap grips will have improved durability here as well. Either way fire us an email info@chromagbikes.com and lets see if can get you sorted out.

Cheers,

A Little Soft, Grippy, and Secure

These grips have so far been great. They feel really good in my hand and have lots of grip. I used to have the Squarewaves but I have small hands so I decided to try these. it was a great decision. The customer service was also really good. Thanks!

Great Grips

Went in to buy Squarewaves (ones I had on my previous bike) but found the Formats and decided to give them a try. Took 2 rides to get used to the feel of them but after that I found them to be perfectly suited to what I need. Glad I went with my gut and got these grips.

Outstanding and I like them

I’ve been a fan of the Clutch for a long time, for the extra grip width and slim handhold. Wanted to try something new, liked the design of these.

The pattern on the format is super comfortable, provides more cushion than the Clutch. The rubber is something new, tacky to the touch and for the first time I can ride gloveless without my profuse sweaty palms breaking traction at critical moments.

Single clamp is a win because, although I’m hardcore, I’m not so hardcore that I need two clamps to keep my gorilla mitts from tearing the grips off the bars. And the lack of outer ring proved the same width of motion as the Clutch without abutting the outer clamp.

Overall these are a new favourite and I highly recommend them.

Ok grips

I really want to like these grips because they feel so good to ride. Although the plastic end caps that are you are un able to take off and replace with metal ones. The first crash I had on these I cracked the inside plastic bit resulting is the whole grip moving around. These lasted me 2 rides... I think if you guys put titanium lock on rings around the end much like your other grips then this would be the best grips out there!

Please take my advice as I love the design and feel of these grips.

Thanks for the feedback Caden we will certainly take this into account! The Format grip is a single clamp grip (lacks the outside clamp) and there are a few benefits to that design. The main one being that if you hold the very outside of your grip, your palm does not rest on a hard alloy clamp (which can speed up fatigue and discomfort). That being said, the ends of the grip are more fragile than a rigid clamp and more susceptible to damage. If you find yourself bashing the ends of your bars a lot, we would probably recommend going with one of our double clamp grips that feature metal bar ends.

All the best, and thanks for the review!
